An Open Letter to the Government of the United Kingdom, Regarding the Imposition of a Government Digital ID

Dear leaders and functionaries of the government of the United Kingdom,

Recently it has come to my attention that you are in consultation with your citizenry about the imposition of a UK government digital ID. Many, many free people are strongly against this idea, and see it as wrong, and wrong-minded. I hereby encourage those who can to write to you and voice their steadfast opposition.

And to you, the leaders and functionaries of the government of the United Kingdom, and to all the governments of the world that would impose mandatory digital identification technology upon their peoples, we know that you are following the road to un-freedom. We know, and we reject the imposition of a government digital ID.

We know that you already take advantage of our data and build algorithms that corral us into herds that are convenient for your purposes but not our own. We know, and we reject the imposition of a government digital ID.

We know that with “enhancements” in tracking and facial recognition technology, you will herd us more, and think of us as the herd, the mob, the masses, and not as humans enjoying the simple act of being. We know, and we reject the imposition of a government digital ID.

We know that you will use this technology to track individuals who want to think and move freely through the world, contra-algorithmically. We know, and we reject the imposition of a government digital ID.

We know that other states, like China, already use their government digital ID technology to oppress political resistance and protest at all levels. We know, and we reject the imposition of a government digital ID.

We know that what we are discussing is the full-scale, top-down imposition of a digital ID, and not whether individuals will have the choice to opt into or out of this technology as they see fit. We know, and we reject the imposition of a government digital ID.

We know that the state would like to fuse a government digital ID with a Central Bank Digital Currency, and erode the freedoms that allow the economic human (homo economicus) to strive ever more ardently to be an active political human (homo politicus). We know, and we reject the imposition of a government digital ID.

We know that privacy is a human right, and that it advances the cause of freedom, and allows both individuals and communities to flourish or fail by virtue of their own will and work. We know, and we reject the imposition of a government digital ID.

We know that convenience is the Trojan horse, and inside it hides absolute state control. We know that freedom is “a quickening spirit” and control is “a boot stamping on a human face—for ever.” We know, and we reject the imposition of a government digital ID.
